On Friday, January 29, 2021, Amazon and the University of Southern California (USC) in a joint collaboration announced that they are creating a platform for research which will focus on the development of new approaches for Machine Learning (ML) privacy, security and trustworthiness.

The “Center for Secure and Trusted Machine Learning” to be housed at the USC’s Viterbi School of Engineering and it will be supporting USC and Amazon researchers in the development of the novel approaches for privacy-preserving ML solutions.

Charles F. Zukoski from the varsity in the US said, “Developing solutions to protect our data requires cutting edge advances. I am pleased the USC-Amazon center will build a platform based on a shared commitment to advancing understanding and developing solutions.”

The center is expected to unleash a new line of fundamental research on privacy and security for ML. It is a timely and critical effort bestowed to the proliferation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the sectors of Education, finance, transport, healthcare and a lot others.

Every year, the center will be providing support to the development of research-based projects which are focused on the development of new methodologies for secure and privacy ML solutions, which are further scalable for supporting billions of users.

Additionally, the center will be providing the annual fellowships to the talented doctoral students who are working in this research area, and enable them towards advancement of research frontiers.

The fellowship recipients will be named as Amazon ML Fellows, recognizing their promising abilities and achievements.

The fellowships will also give students greater understanding of the industry and solution-driven research, and Amazon, along with the university, will be hosting annual workshops and training & recruitment events for university and high school students.
